Kathmandu – Disagreements between tourists or star hotel owners and workers over service facilities have been resolved for the time being. A new agreement was reached after the discussions of the officials of various labor unions and the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) on Sunday.

According to sources, after dozens of rounds of discussions, an agreement was reached between the managers and the labor unions on Sunday. As per the agreement, even the workers staying at home after the hotel is closed will get a minimum of Rs 4,300 to Rs 10,000. The agreement is expected to be valid by next December.

The source said, “Even if the hotel is closed, it has been agreed that all the workers will get the minimum amount.” An agreement has also been reached between the workers and the employers to employ the hotel workers and regular workers on the condition that the previous service facilities will not be reduced. Especially after the start of Nepali rescue flights, some hotels have come into use as quarantine. Those hotels have started getting business.

As per the agreement, the employees working in the two-star hotel will get Rs. 4300 per month if they have to stay at home due to non-arrival of guests. Employees of three-star hotels will get Rs 5,000. A four-star employee will get Rs 8,455. Employees of five-star hotels will get Rs 9,000. It has been agreed that the employees working in the five-star deluxe hotel (more than 200 rooms) will get Rs 10,000 monthly.

As per the agreement reached on Sunday, the five-star deluxe will now get only Rs 10,000 if the hotel is closed even though it has a monthly salary of Rs 50,000. “From the chairman to the doorman, it has been agreed to get a minimum monthly salary in case the hotel is closed,” the source said. Even though the hotel is closed, it has been agreed that no one will be allowed to cut staff till December. After December, the hoteliers and workers have agreed to hold another meeting after assessing the situation.

In the meantime, it has been said that if any employee wants to leave the job, he/she has to pay all the amount which is due to the establishment. One-star and smaller hotels have also agreed to solve the problem with the workers through mutual understanding. Officials and hotel managers of Nepal Hotel Casino and Workers Union, Nepal Independent Hotel Casino and Restaurant Workers Union, and Nepal Tourism and Hotel Related Workers Union participated in the meeting.
