Monday Fast During Month of Shrawan
Kathmandu – After the scorching heat of May and June, the breezy days of July and August are a sign of the arrival of the month of Shrawan. In the Hindu calendar, Shrawan month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The whole month is considered auspicious to seek the blessing of Lord Shiva. Devotees keep various fasts during Shrawan month to please Lord Shiva.
Shrawan month is also known as Sawan month in Nepal. All Mondays or Sombar(s) which fall during Shrawan month are considered highly auspicious for fasting and known as Shrawan Sombar or Sawan Somwar Brats (Fasting). Various of Shiva Temples, Pashupati, Kumbeshwor, Koteshwor Mahadev, and out of the valley is full of women Hindu devotees
According to an ancient belief, fasting on Monday during the month of Shrawan helps bring prosperity in life. It is also believed that Monday is Lord Shiva’s favorite day and when someone observes fast, they are blessed with the happiness of the world and their desires are fulfilled. Offering money and fruits on this day at any Jyotirlinga is considered good.
In religious belief, it is believed that fasting during the month of Shrawan helps unmarried women in finding an ideal husband. Married women keep this fast to pray for the long life of their husband. It is also believed that keeping this fast is linked to a long and happy marital life.
