Confusions Over Visa Fees Being Raised

There is confusion as to how much to charge for foreign nationals and tourists who are forced to stay in Nepal due to the lockdown. The Immigration Department had earlier decided to waive the visa fee, delay fee, and fine for the lockdown period but had again decided to collect the entire fee on June 14. Earlier, it had decided not to charge any fee for the lockdown period and for seven days thereafter.

Ramesh Kumar KC, General of the Immigration Department said that previously it was said, ” The government announced that there will be no penalty and delay fee but later it was again announced that there will be penalty and delay fee which has created great confusion. Probably a new decision will come today or tomorrow.” According to the department, 350 people have already applied for the visa on Sunday and 400 on Monday after paying the visa fee, delay fee, and fine.

“The number of people renewing their visas has increased for fear that the lockdown will continue. They have paid the full fee for the lockdown period,” he said. According to the department, visa renewal costs $ 3 per day and the delay fee is an additional $ 5. Similarly, the fine is up to Rs 50,000. Of these, Chinese citizens do not have to pay the visa fee for 150 days. But in the case of citizens of other countries who have expired visas, they have renewed the visa by paying up to $ 240.

According to the department, 12,000 people from different countries have been rescued during the lockdown and KC said that there is still the same number of foreign nationals in Nepal. The government has suspended international flights till July 5. But rescue efforts are underway through various embassies and governments. The department is currently working on new visas, renewals, and visa additions.
